Granola is a food that better be in every one of your cupboards.  As one of the best snacks to sustain energy and maintain a healthy “operating system,” you can’t afford not to have the shelves stocked!  This entry is not meant to be a “health benefits of” article; instead, this should go under the “must have recipes” category!  This snack is cheap (for the most part) and simple to make.

Most people think there is some secret to making granola, so they are willing to pay over $5 per bag at their local health stores.  Or they think it tastes like crap and wouldn’t even consider paying that much.  Well pay attention, and you can make your own cheap granola that tastes exactly how you want in about 30 minutes!

Below is the most common type of granola found in Health Guy’s cupboard:

Homemade Brown Sugar Blueberry & Walnut Granola

  • 1 cup oats
  • ¼ cup sunflower seeds (ground)
  • ¼ cup walnuts (ground)
  • 1 Tbsp flaxseed
  • 2 Tbsp wheat bran
  • ¼ cup dried blueberries
  • 1/8 cup canola oil
  • 1/8 cup honey
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar

The above quantities are based on trial-and-error until an optimal amount was reached for a single healthy individual (me) to consume without waste.  Other ingredients that usually sneak their way into my bowl are peanut butter, cinnamon, tart cherries, pecans, shredded coconut, etc…the list is never-ending.  So even if you hate the selection on the store shelves, you have no excuse.  Just throw whatever ingredients you want in the mix (Please keep it healthy though.  I don’t want any emails from people telling me I should melt two Hershey bars into the mix to make it taste great)!

Okay, now step by step, here is how to avoid the gargantuan grocery bill:

*Step 1.  Preheat oven to 300°F.

Step 2.  Combine all dry ingredients (except fruit) into large bowl and mix.

Step 3.  Combine oil, honey and sugar into pot and heat on stovetop until all ingredients are a runny sloppy mixture.

Step 4.  Slowly pour runny slop onto dry ingredients, stirring occasionally to coat entire batch.

*Step 5.   Spread your ooey gooey mixture evenly on a baking pan/sheet and bake for 25-35 minutes (golden brown), turning once during cooking to avoid over crispifying your goods.

Step 6.  Add your fruit, you fruit!

Step 7.  Consume with other active living enthusiast whilst backpacking on your favorite trails.

*Oven temperature and cook times may vary depending on your equipment.  If at first you don’t succeed…

Any leftovers should be tightly covered and stored appropriately.

The possibilities are endless,

TTH Guy
